“APT.,” one the biggest hits of the year by Rosé and Bruno Mars certainly has the potential to win big at the Grammys on Feb. 1.

The song is up for three nominations: Song of the year, record of the year and best pop duo/group performance. Bruno Mars and Rosé are also among the night’s performers.

The song, released in 2024, brings together two forces in the music world: Many time Grammy-winner Bruno Mars and Rosé, a member of the K-pop girl group Blackpink.

Jae-Ha Kim, a journalist who specializes in Korean culture, says the song’s cross-cultural appeal is no surprise.

“The entire song is an earworm! It has a catchy beat, English lyrics that are easy to sing along with, and two giant pop stars. Rosé and Bruno Mars’ voices blend so well together and they exude fun in the accompanying music video, which is really refreshing in its simplicity. It was also helpful that both artists have huge fanbases that supported the song from the get-go, which made the song impossible for the general public to ignore,” she told TODAY.com in a statement.

What does the K-pop song mean? Here’s what to know.

What Does ‘APT.’ Mean?

According to Kim, the title of the song, and the recurring word in Korean that pops up throughout the song, is the word for apartment.

“But Koreans don’t say ‘apartment.’ They say apateu/아파트 (pronounded ah-pah-teu). Apateu is a word Koreans have used for decades,” Kim said.

Fans of K-dramas might have also been familiar with this word before the song came around.

“In the 1980s, having a modern apartment was a status symbol,” Kim continued. “K-drama viewers may recall hearing the word in shows, where the characters talk about wanting to move out of their old house into a new apateu.”

What Rosé Has Said About the Lyrics’ Meaning

The lyrics have a double meaning. “Apateu” is also a popular drinking game in Korea. “In Korea, it’s called the Apartment Game,” Kim said.

During an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Rosé said the song was inspired by turning the legal drinking age in Korea and playing APT with Blackpink.

“I remember when I turned 20, my Blackpink — the girls in the group, they got like, all the alcohol we could get. We were like, ‘We’re gonna drink tonight,” she told Fallon. “We’d play drinking games and ‘APT’ was one of them.”

The word “apateu” is repeated during the drinking game.

She explained how she brought the concept to the studio in an interview with Vogue.

“‘Basically, we were hanging out in the studio and I was like, ‘How about I teach you guys some Korean drinking games,’ and then I started doing it,” she said.

Rosé said her team was “obsessed” with the game and she decided to write a song about it. She started to second-guess herself soon after.

“I remember going home kind of freaked out. I was like, ‘Is this OK that I’ve written a song about a drinking game? Is this too unserious?’ And so I got all of the producers and songwriters to delete the song off of their phones.”

After showing it around to a few people, she said everyone was “so obsessed” with the song that she decided to bring it back to life and finish it.
