Tristan Prettyman grew up surfing and enjoying the California lifestyle in San Diego, where she still resides. The singer, who’s music was featured in the Josh Duhamel film “Safe Haven,” got her career started playing in local clubs. Prettyman, 30, currently is on tour supporting her latest album “Cedar and Gold.” For updates on her current tour, check out her website. Q. What is your favorite vacation destination?
A. Bali.
Q. To someone who was going there for the first time, what would you recommend that they do during their visit?
A. Yoga. Beach. Chill Out.
Q. What was the first trip you took as a child?
A. I think it was Las Vegas. I have a weird memory of standing in the buffet line at Circus Circus thinking this is weird.
Q. What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your travels?
A. Go with the flow and be present in the moment.
Q. Where are your favorite weekend getaways?
A. My hammock! But Mexico is pretty amazing, too. From San Diego, it’s so close to drive to Rosarito and rent a house for cheap and relax, surf and chill out. My parents also have property about 19 hours down in a little surf town. I love going there to get away. No phone service or Internet. It’s the perfect unplug-from-everything getaway.
Q. How do your travels differ depending on whether you’re touring or taking a vacation with friends and/or loved ones?
A. Touring you have people constantly looking out for you, telling you where to be and when. Vacation is like a free for all.
Q. Where is the most romantic destination?
A. I backpacked around Europe with my best friend when I was 19. One of our stops was Vernazza, in the Cinque Terre (in Italy), which is one of the most beautiful, romantic places I’ve ever been. I always said it’d be a great place for a honeymoon.
Q. If you’ve ever gone away for the holidays, which was the best trip?
A. I went to visit my brother in San Francisco two Christmases ago, which was my first Christmas away from my parents. We had a blast walking around the city all day. It was special for sure, but we did miss our parents and a big dinner and all that jazz.
Q. What are your favorite hotels?
A. You know, I like fancy hotels, but I am also fine at a Hampton Inn. I do love the Redbury Hotel in Los Angeles. They’re like loft-style apartments, so they have a kitchen and a good amount of space. Great for long stays.
Q. Are you an adventurous eater?
A. I try to avoid wheat and dairy because they make for a lot of mucus in the throat. It’s bad for singing. But I pretty much eat everything, I’m an opportunivore. I ate a fish eye when we were in Japan a couple weeks ago. I guess I do have a pretty strong stomach, although eggs make me wanna puke.
Q. What are your five favorite cities?
A. Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Big Sur in Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Byron Bay, Australia and Nosara, Costa Rica.
Q. Where have you traveled to that most reminded you of home?
A. Boulder, Colo.
Q. Where would you like to go that you have never been to before?
A. Alaska.
Q. When you go away, what are some of your must-have items?
A. Epicuren lip balm, Beaming Protein Powder, sunglasses, iPad, reusable water bottle and reusable bamboo silverware.
Q. What would be your dream/fantasy trip?
A. Maldives for the surf, surf, surf and vacation in the sun.
Q. What are your favorite restaurants?
A. Solace and the Moonlight Lounge in Encinitas, Calif. I love Big Star in Chicago. My favorite restaurant in the world is Kaikaya in Tokyo.
Q. What is your guilty pleasure when you’re on the road?
A. Late-night food.
Q. What kind of research do you do before you go away on a trip?
A. I love referencing the Live Like You’re on Vacation (LLYOV.org) website.
Q. What is your best and/or worst vacation memory?
A. Best vacation was probably going to Costa Rica for a surf trip. The waves were perfect. The water was 80 degrees. The hammocks were cozy and we lived off beer and plantains!
