When Big Hit Entertainment announced that it was launching a new boy band, the internet went wild digging for more information. Why? Because Big Hit is home to the world’s most famous boy band — BTS — and everyone wanted to know who TXT was.
Before ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, there was the New Kids on the Block. Joey McIntyre — the littlest kid — is now a married man of 31 who is touring to promote his new solo album, “8:09” (Artemis Records). A successful actor who has starred onstage (“tick, tick … BOOM!”) as well as in film (the upcoming “Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding”) and TV (“Boston Public”), McIntyre is concentrating on his singing now.
Is a breakup in the works for the Backstreet Boys? Sounds as though the group wants it that way. Us Weekly predicted a breakup more than a year ago and in the new issue–on stands today–the magazine reports the band members are readier than ever to say bye, bye, bye. (Er, sorry. Wrong boy band.) According to Us, eldest member Kevin Richardson, 31, said the Boys were “having meetings to discuss” calling it quits.
There’s a lot of screaming going on when you tour with the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter. But Justin Roman is used to it. As one of the singers in the pop trio Vi3, Roman has elicited a shriek or two from enthusiastic fans. “We’re really having a lot of fun on this tour,” says the Chicago-based artist. “Nick has been a blast and the fans have been really nice to us.”
It’s obvious ‘N Sync has spent quite a bit of money on its tour. In the first of two consecutive nights Thursday at the Allstate Arena, the world’s most popular boy band captured its young audience’s attention with a series of flashy explosions, a handful of costume changes and a slew of hit songs. Still, something was lacking from this concert. Or, perhaps it wasn’t that the boys were missing anything but that they were trying to do too much.
Don’t use the “B” word around Vi3. That’s right, the Chicago-based trio doesn’t like to be lumped with boy bands. But let’s face it–if it looks like a boy band and dances like a boy band, well …
“If I wasn’t performing I’d be on a farm somewhere,” says Joey McIntyre. “I don’t know how to do any of that stuff, but I could learn. Or hire someone. I’d sit back and have some lemonade on the porch.
There was a little of everything at the Backstreet Boys’ concert Monday night at the Allstate Arena, from pyrotechnics to druids to ballerinas. But for the youngsters who filled the venue to capacity, all that could have disappeared, and they still would have been happy just to see–and, I guess, hear–Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough do what they do.
Before No Authority, there was “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.” For Ricky G., anyhow. The 19-year-old member of the boy band No Authority had an acting career going for him before he decided to concentrate solely on the group. Under the stage name Ricky Felix (his mother’s maiden name), Ricky G. danced opposite Mike Myers in “Austin Powers” and appeared in Natalie Portman’s film “Anywhere But Here.”
