We are family

Did you know that parents have an official day? It’s called Parents’ Day. In the United States, it falls on July 28 this year. But in Korea, Parents’ Day is today. And since I’m impatient, I’m going to start the celebration early.

What’s that, you say? You’ve never heard of Parents’ Day? Truth be told, I wasn’t familiar with the day myself. But, now that I’m a mom, I’ll take whatever holiday you want to throw my way. (And it really is official. See here for proof.)

It’s funny. In the past, I would’ve celebrated Parents’ Day by honoring my mother and father. Because even though I am a mom, I don’ think of myself as a serious parent like they were to me when I was little. But, I guess I am. My husband and I had no idea what we were doing when our little boy came into our lives. We learned on the job, so to speak, and we did alright. The kid has no complaints. Yet.

So, today I’d like to give myself a little pat on the back. My husband deserves some kudos as well.

To all of you out there who’re parents, I salute you. And to those of you who aren’t, go give your mom and dad a call. I’ll bet they don’t know today’s Parents’ Day, either.
