ARCADIA, Mo.--This little city (pop. 567), located south of St.
Louis in the Ozark Mountains, is home to the Arcadia Academy, an antiques
mall that used to be the Ursuline Academy, a Catholic girls' boarding school
that Bob Hope’s daughter attended.
There’s more antiquing happening along Main Street, where you'll find the
Arcadian Cafe (123 Main St., 573-546-2432)—probably the only place within
100 miles where you can order bison, frog legs, wild boar or venison. They
also have plain ol’ beef and veggies, too.
Nearby, make the easy climb to Missouri’s highest spot, just 1,773 feet
above sea level at Taum Sauk Mountain, one of the peaks in the St. Francois
range, and designated a state park (mostateparks.com).
Stay: The red-brick Victorian Gree Roof Inn is a beaut, and just
a two-minute drive from Arcadia, in the town of Ironton. Then inn's three
