I am not a big dairy fan. I’ll take a little cream in my coffee, but that’s about it. But, if we’re talking ice cream, I’m quite the aficionado!

My theory about ice cream (and most desserts) is that if I’m going to consume all those empty calories, I want it to be reallllllllly good and worthwhile. I’m really lucky, because one of our friends works for Häagen-Dazs and is very generous sharing ice cream with his friends. (Thank you, Steve!) But my family really enjoys making our own.

Kyle making ice cream x 640My son has always enjoyed helping with food preparation; and I really enjoy that he knows how food is made. He helps his father plant the vegetables for our garden. And, when the time is right, he helps harvest the lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and herbs.

He helps me make pizza dough in our bread machine and then helps his dad make the pizzas outdoors on our grill.

And, ever since he was a toddler, he has been in charge of making the ice cream during the summer months.

Yes, it’s so easy to make ice cream that a baby can literally do it (almost) by himself.

Here’s our son way back when he was 3 making ice cream. Pretty cute, huh? 🙂

There are just a few simple steps to take:

✔ After chilling the aluminum canister in the freezer, add cream, whole milk, sugar and lots of vanilla. There are all kinds of recipes, but we like it plain and simple.

✔ Put ice and ice cream salt into the wooden bucket. And then crank away! When the kid gets tired of hand churning, we press the “on” button and let the electric motor do the rest.

That’s it.

Note: Give yourself a couple hours to make the ice cream before the guests arrive. You’ll want to chill it in the freezer for a bit once it has thickened in the cannister. Also, store the paddle with the canister. When we made it this past weekend, our ice cream was very runny because…um…I had forgotten to put the paddle in! D’oh!

We paid $65 for this Aroma ice cream maker in 2008 at our local Target and it’s still going strong. I’ve seen similar ones at Target, Home Depot and Lowe’s for around the same price.
